This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will take a three-month break until April, when the next major arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — incorporating more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” Yet, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime had a half-year break that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to deliver fans with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.
Adopting Modern Trends
Although some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or additional to make up for time.
It's the end of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have numerous side stories, and the standard of the art can change drastically between one episode and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in seasons, with a couple maximum releasing each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
